MTV VMAs 2021: Nomination e Vincitori, Performer e Presenter

Si è tenuta domenica 12 settembre al Barclays Center di New York la cerimonia di premiazione degli MTV Video Music Awards 2021. A guidare la lista delle nomination quest'anno è stato Justin Bieber (7) sguito da Megan Thee Stallion (6), Billie Eilish, BTS, Doja Cat, Drake, Giveon, Lil Nas X e Olivia Rodrigo (5 ciascuno). I VMAs sono andati in onda sui canali lineari e sulle piattaforme digitali in più di 175 paesi e territori raggiungendo quasi 400 milioni di famiglie in quasi 30 lingue diverse. In Italia, lo show è stato trasmesso in diretta nella notte tra domenica 12 e lunedì 13 settembre a partire dalle 00.30 con il Pre Show e dalle 2.00 con il Live Show e in onda su MTV (canale Sky 131 e in streaming su NOW) e su MTV Music (canale Sky 132 e 704). Lunedì 13 settembre lo show sarà di nuovo in onda su MTV dalle 21.10 in versione sottotitolata.

Doja Cat al debutto come Host

Doja Cat ha presentato gli MTV "VMAs" del 2021, oltre ad essere presente tra i performer. Questa giovane artista nel 2020 si è esibita in un mash-up di "Say So" & "Like That", aggiudicandosi il suo primo "Moon Person" per "PUSH Best New Artist". 

Doja Cat, nominata per 3 volte ai GRAMMY, ha fatto il suo primo upload su Soundcloud nel 2013 all'età di 16 anni. È cresciuta nei dintorni di Los Angeles e ha sviluppato un talento per la musica studiando pianoforte e appassionandosi ad artisti come Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, Nicki Minaj, Drake e tanti altri. Ha imparato da autodidatta ad utilizzare Logic e a comporre su un midicontroller. Nel 2014 ha firmato con Kemosabe/RCA pubblicando il suo "Purrr!" EP seguito dal suo album di debutto "Amala" nella primavera del 2018, ma è stato grazie alla pubblicazione di "Mooo!" nel 2018 che ha sconvolto il mondo della critica. Doja Cat ha pubblicato il suo secondo album "Hot Pink" nel 2019 con oltre 12,5 miliardi di stream in tutto il mondo. Hot Pink include il singolo Juicy, che ha raggiunto il #1 su Rhythm radio, Say So, nominato ai Grammy e Streets, colonna sonora della 'Silhouette Challenge', ad oggi una delle più grandi tendenze su TikTok. Say So, che ha raggiunto il primo posto nella Billboard Hot 100 ed è stato certificato platino per ben 4 volte dalla RIAA e trasmesso in streaming oltre 6,1 miliardi di volte, ha catapultato Doja tra le superstar globali. Il nuovo album, Planet Her, è uscito a giugno 2021 e ha dominato le classifiche, debuttando al primo posto della classifica Billboard Top R&B Albums e al secondo posto della Billboard Top 200 e della Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Planet Her ha segnato un record di ascolti nel suo primo giorno di rilascio su Spotify, è stato il miglior album Pop all'uscita in base allo stream secondo i dati MRC, e segna sia il più grande debutto sia per una rapper donna sia nell'R&B femminile del 2021. Kiss Me More ft. SZA è stato certificato platino dalla RIAA e ha raggiunto il primo posto nella Top 40 e nella Rhythm radio con oltre 2,7 miliardi di stream in tutto il mondo. 

Performer e Presenter

Olivia Rodrigo, Camila Cabello, Lil Nas X, LORDE, Machine Gun Kelly, Chloe, Doja Cat, Shawn Mendes, Twenty-one pilots e Foo Fighters sono stati  tra i performer dei #VMAs 2021.

Camila Cabello è tornata ai VMAs con una performance del nuovo singolo Don't Go Yet, dopo la sua esibizione di Senorita del 2019 in coppia con Shawn Mendes. Lil Nas X, in sfida per il premio "Video of the Year", ha performato sul palco dei VMAs quest'anno dopo aver portato Panini sul palcoscenico nell'edizione del 2019. Di ritorno sul palco dei VMAs per la prima volta dal 2017 LORDE, con un'esibizione in prima tv mondiale del suo nuovo progetto Solar Power, uscito il 20 agosto. E poi ancora presente Machine Gun Kelly al suo debutto sul palco dei VMAs, con una performance in anteprima mondiale del nuovo singolo papercuts, dal suo prossimo album born with horns: il musicista vincitore in carica della categoria "Best Alternative", che ha portato a casa la sua prima statuetta ai VMAs 2020, è stato ancora una volta nominato nella stessa categoria. E poi la cantautrice multi-platino Olivia Rodrigo sul palco dei VMAs 2021, con una performance della sua hit mondiale good 4 u. Olivia Rodrigo, nominata per la prima volta ai VMAs, è stata nominata per cinque premi, tra cui "Artist of the Year" e "Song of the Year". Si sono esibiti ai VMAs di quest'anno anche i Foo Fighters, segnando il loro ritorno su questo palcoscenico per la prima volta dal 2007.  E poi Travis Barker insieme a Machine Gun Kelly per un'anteprima mondiale del loro nuovo singolo papercuts.

Justin Bieber super ospite

Justin Bieber si è esibito agli MTV "VMAs" 2021, evento in cui l'artista è stato in testa alla classifica con 7 nomination, inclusi i premi "Video of the Year" e "Artist of the Year". Non estraneo a MTV e all'iconico palcoscenico, Bieber è tornato ai "VMAs" a 6 anni di distanza dalla commovente performance di What Do You Mean? del 2015. Nel 2021 ha proposto collaborazioni in diversi generi, tra le più recenti: Essence, Remix realizzato con WizKid & Tems e Don't Go con Skrillex e Don Toliver.

Ai Foo Fighters il primo US Global Icon Award

Dopo una lunga storia con MTV, i Foo Fighters hanno ricevuto il loro primo MTV "VMAs" Global Icon Award. Proveniente dagli Europe Music Awards (EMAs) di MTV, il Global Icon Award celebra un artista/band la cui carriera è senza precedenti, il cui impatto ed influenza continui hanno mantenuto un enorme successo globale nella musica ed oltre. I VMAs hanno onorato l'icona globale che ha lasciato un segno indelebile nel panorama musicale e continua ad influenzare, ispirare ed evolversi. I precedenti destinatari del premio includono Queen, Eminem e Whitney Houston, tra gli altri.

I Foo Fighters si sono esibiti ai VMAs 2021, segnando il loro ritorno su questo palcoscenico per la prima volta dal 2007. I Foo Fighters hanno inoltre ottenuto tre nomination: Best Rock: "Shame Shame" / Best Choreography: "Shame Shame" / Best Cinematography: "Shame Shame".

Nominati per la prima volta nel 1996 per "Big Me" in quattro categorie (Video of the Year, Best Group Video, Best Alternative Video, Best Direction), i Foo Fighters hanno portato a casa un totale di due vittorie ai VMAs (nel 1996 hanno vinto il Best Group Video con "Big Me" e nel 2011 hanno vinto il Best Rock con "Walk"). Più recentemente hanno portato a casa un premio nel 2011 grazie alla canzone "Walk" nella categoria Best Rock Video.

Nel corso degli anni, ai VMAs i Foo Fighters si sono esibiti nel 1997 eseguendo "Monkey Wrench" ed "Everlong" durante il pre-show, poi ancora nel 2007 hanno suonato un medley di loro successi che includevano anche guest star quali Cee-Lo, Lemmy dei Motorhead e Serj Tankian dei System of the Down.
