Dopo l'edizione del 2020 saltata a causa della pandemia del Covid19, la cerimonia di premiazione della 29a edizione degli MTV Movie & TV Awards si è svolta nella notte italiana tra il 16 e 17 maggio 2021. E' stata la quarta edizione ad onorare insieme film e televisione. Leslie Jones ha presentato la cerimonia. Nella notte italiana tra il 17 e 18 maggio 2021 si è tenuta la cerimonia di premiazione della prima edizione degli MTV Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted, i premi dedicati ai programmi "senza copione", presentata da Nikki Glaser. Entrambe le serate si sono tenute all'Hollywood Palladium di Los Angeles, con la presenza di un po' di pubblico 'tamponato'.
