TRAMA
Il nuovo numero arrivato corrisponde a Simon Lee, sondaggista del governatore Murray, nelle elezioni che si stanno per svolgere. Simon, in realta', e' la vittima designata di Samaritan che vuole che diventi governatore Dawson, il vice della rivale di Murray, Michelle Perez. La squadra interviene e in qualche modo riesce a rimettere le cose a posto.
The Machine produces the number of brilliant political pollster Simon Lee (Jason Ritter) and member of New York Governor James Murray's reelection campaign. When Murray loses the election, Lee becomes entangled in a conspiracy created by Samaritan to gain political control by rigging elections. When Lee (correctly) suspects that the election was rigged, Samaritan attempts to kill him. Reese on the other hand is scheduled to attend therapy sessions with a counselor due to his tendency to shoot people on the job. Initially he tries to smooth-talk the therapist, who is not fooled. Meanwhile, Root discloses to Finch that the machine has stopped talking to her fearing Samaritan would listen, and all that she gets are whispers. She admits feeling afraid. During the episode, the warmth between Root and Finch grows. The action comes to a head when operatives of Samaritan, who want Lee assassinated, and operatives of The Machine cross paths. Root offers to help Finch by providing a diversion and is injured in her attempt. Nonetheless she manages to divert Samaritan's focus from the target. Finch and Shaw produce fake data to convince Lee that his prediction about the election was incorrect, leading to Samaritan disregarding him. Reese tells his therapist why he feels compelled to save people, referring to his failure to save Carter. In the end, Greer and the Samaritan operative from "Panopticon" (Cara Buono) discuss Samaritan's plans to gain political control, Samaritan instructs them to "Find the machine", and Finch indicates to The Machine his desire to communicate with it. Meanwhile, a series of flashbacks show the process Finch and Ingram went through to create The Machine. As they attempt to give it a moral code, The Machine is repeatedly destroyed and its code rewritten as it begins to preserve itself and aggressively fight back against any attempt to constrain it. When one version attempts to asphyxiate Finch in an attempt to enter the real world, he tries one last time the following day to rework The Machine, ultimately creating the modern version of The Machine.
